Grumpy Bulldog Does America Day 57: Bizarro Vegas

Today I went back to Las Vegas--the New Mexico one, which is like the Nevada one, only the opposite.  I didn't like it the first time I was here in 2006, so I probably shouldn't have come back.  I suppose I could have pushed on another hour or so to Santa Rosa, but whatever.

I left Colorado Springs a little after 10, after I got breakfast (French toast sticks again, but this time with sausage) and killed some stuff in Deer Hunter 2014.  It was pretty much the same as driving up from Santa Fe, only on the other side of the road.  So maybe some of the pictures I took are the same, but at least it's a different angle.

I stopped at a rest stop about 30 miles from Las Vegas to piss.  By then I was pretty much getting into the last 50 miles (estimated) of gas.  There aren't a lot of places to stop between Las Vegas and Raton on the Colorado border.  I might have stopped in Raton but they had construction there, so fuck it.

When I did get to Las Vegas I had about 15 miles left.  Then of course the first gas station I come to for some reason has a line.  I'm not sure why since they were like 2 cents more than the one I went to down the road.

It was after 2pm and I hadn't gotten lunch, so I went to Dairy Queen and got a Blizzard.  I ate it outside since brats were making a bunch of noise inside.  I suppose that's not the most nutritious lunch, but whatever.

Then I went and found the old train station and this creepy old hotel that would make a good haunted house.  I'd been there last time, though I don't think they had a fence around the hotel last time.  What I think is cooler is across the street is an old AMC dealership, with the signs still up.  I'd have to check the pictures from 2006, but I think it had windows last time.

I found the old downtown area and just took some pictures from the car.  Last time I actually got out and walked around.  Unless you want to parallel park on the circle in the middle, you have to go a block or so away to park, which I didn't feel like doing this time.  I did pass the El Realto or whatever it's called.  I ate there in 2006 because the guidebook recommended it.  I forget what I got, but it was OK.

So after driving around a little I went to the Super 8 and checked in.  I think some old lady was pissed that I parked next to the handicap spot.  I'm not sure why but she was grumbling about something like that.  Maybe she thought that was handicapped too, but it wasn't.

About 5 I went out to KFC and got the $5 fill-up thing to save some money.  They forgot to give me a spork, so I had to go downstairs to grab a spoon.  They have this weird thing here where they have free soup from 6-9pm.  I'm not sure what the deal is except it is SUPer 8, right?  I tried some of that later.  It was chicken enchilada or something, which was OK but a little spicy.  I hope it doesn't come back to haunt me later.

Tomorrow I push on to Tucumcari on the east side.  The last time I left Las Vegas, I really had to shit, but on the road between Las Vegas and Santa Rosa there's nowhere to shit unless you want to go in a ditch or ask to use someone's house.  I started going like 85 by the end to make it to my motel room in time.  It was a pretty close thing.  Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.  Maybe I should stop for some Depends.
