Hellathon: Stephen King's The Long Walk Meets Dante's Divine Comedy

HellathonHellathon by Bennet Lodge
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a fun and suspenseful yarn. Basically every 1000 years, Hell has a race where damned souls basically do a Dante's Inferno thing and go through all the layers of Hell through Purgatory and finally to the gates of Heaven. The winner gets to go back to Earth for a second chance.

Banan is a Saxon warrior from 8th Century Britain who conquered the Welsh and then was killed for turning away from the church. In Hell he put his skills as a warrior to use, helping princes of Hell in their internal power struggles. But now he wants out and the race is the way to do it. But things get more complicated when he finds out his former right-hand man has secretly been killing everyone on Earth from Banan's bloodline. There's only a girl named Loni left in New York City. So along with the race, Banan has to try to save her and preserve his bloodline.

This is the sort of book that creates its own world with all the different creatures of Hell, Purgatory, and even Paradise. It was pretty imaginative and well done. The end feels a bit sudden after all that happened, but maybe it's that I wanted to spend more time with these characters, which is the sign of a good book.

That is all.

It does sound good and kind of different.
