Dog Days of Writing

I haven't done a lot of writing related posts this year.  I'm just taking a minute or two to post my semi-annual progress report.  There's not a lot to talk about really.  I've only written two stories this year, both replacement stories for the second book of a series.  They came out to less than 150,000 words altogether.  That might seem good until you compare it with 2010 when throughout the whole year I wrote almost one million words.  That was pretty epic.  Last year I got off to a really slow start, struggling to finish a couple of things.  Then I picked up some momentum in July and then in August hit on a new idea that carried me through the rest of the year, so I guess things could pick up.

But mostly this year I've been more focused on editing stuff, for the obvious reason that signing with a publisher meant I had to do some editing.  Then of course I decided instead of trying to edit the second one to just rebuild it entirely.  Which then involves more editing.  And then I read this other story I'd written a while ago.  I'd tried to write a sequel in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2007 but neither one had turned out very well.  (They quite frankly sucked ass.)  Finally, five years later, I thought of how to do it better.  So hooray.

There you have it.  How are your writing goals coming along?

  1. My writing goals are going horribly, thanks for asking. You know how my editing went with the short story collection. I've never been near as productive as a million words in one year on fiction.

    In addition, I'm going crazy.

  2. A million words in one year is amazing.I couldn't write a million words of gibberish in one year.

  3. I really thought I would get a lot done this summer. Now I really hope I will get that stuff done in the fall.

  4. Well, I'm a wee bit short of my million word dream, but I'm doing okay I suppose. Mostly working in fits and starts. But still plugging away.

  5. I have's just a matter of reaching them. I've been pushing myself lately.

  6. Hey PT,
Your writing endeavours and your determination are to be admired. Total respect to you. My writing goals are doing very well and I'm inspired to keep going by my guest writer on my site, Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet star.

  7. My writing days this year have been slower, even if I've still accomplished quite a lot. For me, 2011 was the epic writing year. I really need to get into revising more, though. But I have some projects I really want to finish off in rough form at least, before I get stuck into revising other stuff.

Good luck for the rest of the year :)

  8. Just letting you know that I'm almost done with a book I'm reading and yours is right after that. I can't wait to see what's up with the Scarlet Knight in the next installment. I of course will try to give you the best feedback I can.
