Box Office Blitz Week 18: Raising the Stakes!

I like to keep reminding you of this...
As you may or may not be aware, the grand prize for winning the complete run of Box Office Blitz is $25.  You can get that in whatever form you want:  Amazon gift card, movie theater gift card, Red Lobster gift card, Toys R Us gift card, even cash if you have Paypal.  (Basically as long as I can send it online.)  I hadn't given any thought to any other fabulous prizes.  But since Tony Laplume has been firmly ensconced in first for a while, it seems like people may lose motivation unless there's some other incentive.

So now we'll have runner-up prizes!  The second place finisher will get $15 in whatever form he/she chooses.  And the third place finisher will get $10 in some form.  (In the unlikely event I finish first, second, or third, the next person in the standings will be counted as that position.  So right now Rusty would get the third place prize because he's in 4th.)  If you don't make the top 3, you're eligible to get a free ebook from Planet 99 Publishing of your choosing.  You can see the list here.  If you don't place in the top 3 and you don't have an ereader then I don't know, I guess you're out of luck.  Maybe that's more incentive for you to finish in the top 3.

There you go, the stakes are now raised.  It's on!

Here's the list of movies from my local megaplex (* denotes a new release)
  • 42

  2. Gatsby $30M
  3. Pain and Gain $8M
Now you make your guesses in the comments, but don't forget the bonus question!

For 100 points this week:
Do you think Gatsby will make half as much as Iron Man 3, more than half, or less than half?  By my guesses I'd say slightly more than half, but I have no idea.  Obviously.

Results will be posted Sunday afternoon.  That is all.

I would agree with you and say slightly more than half.

And that reminds me, I haven't seen RDJr in the new Iron Man yet... what is wrong with me!!!??

DiCaprio is a big draw, but I think IM3 will stay strong. Tyler Perry is a big draw with women, so I think he'll have a strong opening.
1. Iron Man 3 - $70 million
2. The Great Gatsby - $41 million
3. Peeples - $13 million

Bonus: More than half

I hadn't realized Tyler Perry was producing that one. I guess he only puts his name in the titles of ones he writes/directs?

I'm thinking a big drop for IM3, so
1. Iron Man Three -- $72m
2. Gatsby -- $35m
3. Peeples -- $16m

I'm going to go against my predictions, though, and say that Gatsby will bring in more than half.

Oh, and Gatsby is in 3D because Luhrmann believes that Fitzgerald would have liked it that way.

Iron Man 3 will take in $80 million
Gatsby will take in $35 million
Peeples - $18 million

Gatsby will make less than half of what Iron Man 3 takes in.

lol. Since he died 1940 I'm sure he was a huge fan of the 3D cinema. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the added price of every ticket.

Gatsby will make much less than half of what Iron Man III will make.

#1 Iron Man III-----$60 mil.

#2 Great Gatsby-----$24 mil.

#3 Mud--------------#14 mil.

Luhrmann said Fitzgerald was always involved in whatever the latest tech trend was, so he feels sure that if F Scott were alive today, he would want 3d.

Riiiiiiiight. I'll buy that for a dollar.

MY BOX OFFICE PICKS: a play in 3 acts.
By Briane F. Pagel, JR.

ACT ONE: We see a kitchen table. A man is sitting, looking at his laptop. Around him are all kinds of dinosaur toys.

MAN: I AM SO TIRED. I AM GLAD I CAME HOME FROM WORK EARLY, SO THAT I DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING ELSE TODAY.

WIFE: SO BASICALLY TODAY IS LIKE EVERY OTHER DAY?

[pause for audience laughter. curtain closes]

ACT TWO: SAME KITCHEN TABLE, A FEW MOMENTS AFTER THE FIRST SCENE.

MAN: DO WE HAVE ANY OF THAT PIZZA LEFTOVER FROM LAST NIGHT?

WIFE: WE DIDN'T HAVE PIZZA LAST NIGHT.

MAN: WHAT? I AM 100% SURE I ATE SOME PIZZA LAST NIGHT.

WIFE: THIS PLAY SEEMS TO BE DRAGGING A BIT.

MAN: PERHAPS SOMETHING WILL COME ALONG IN THE THIRD ACT TO LIVEN IT UP AND PROVIDE SOME MOTIVATION?

curtain

ACT III: SCENE: THE TOP OF A VOLCANO, WHICH IS IMPROBABLY SITTING ATOP A GLACIER IN ANTARCTICA, WHICH FOR SOME REASON IS LOCATED ON THE EDGE OF THE GRAND CANYON, WHICH FOR SOME REASON IS ON MARS.

MAN: GRAB MY HAND! IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO RESCUE YOU FROM THAT PRECIPICE YOU'RE HANGING FROM UNDERNEATH WHICH FLAMING ICE CROCODILES OF MARS ARE WAITING FOR YOU TO FALL SO THEY CAN EAT YOUR SOUL!

WOMAN: I... CAN'T... QUITE... REACH... IT!

MAN: I DIDN'T NEED THIS MUCH MOTIVATION! I WOULD HAVE SETTLED FOR SIMPLY BEING PROMISED PERHAPS $15 OR MAYBE A FREE BOOK FROM THAT GREAT INDIE PUBLISHER, PLANET 99 BOOKS! THAT'S ENOUGH TO GET ANYONE TO DO ANYTHING!

*curtain*

Watch for the thrilling conclusion of this play in future comments.

Anyway:

1. Iron Man: ALL THE MONEY.
2. The Great Gatsby. A LESSER AMOUNT OF MONEY.
3. Disconnect. VIRTUALLY NO MONEY.

I am not sure of the rules of this game, so do I have to say a specific dollar amount? It doesn't matter. I'm playing for pride. And a free e-book. SWEET.

Also, as to Gatsby: I'm going to go with EXACTLY 1/2. TO THE PENNY.

My God, I am perhaps a lot more overtired after this week than I thought.

This is his first movie that wasn't one of his own projects.

1. Iron Man III ($70 mil)
2. The Great Gatsby ($40 mil)
3. Peeples ($15 mil)

Gatsby will definitely make more than half of Iron Man's gross. Al thanks to Tobey Maguire. Dude was Spider-Man. Made lots of money. Then he went away. Different peeples entirely are starving for Tobey!

Tony Laplume said...

"Al thanks" is not a typo. My given initials are in fact A.L. You may call me Al. And I was speaking in the third person. You can also read that sentence as "I thank Tobey Maguire for this bold prediction."
