Tales of the Scarlet Knight: My Date With Spider-Man!

In my bedroom, I have my two homemade Scarlet Knight action figures next to Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends.  One day I got thinking, if they actually met, Emma Earl and Peter Parker would really get along pretty well.  Besides they both have alliterative names and are superheroes, they're both really smart, interested in science, were orphaned, raised by an aunt, and share a common sense of responsibility.  Plus we know Peter likes redheads.

A crossover story would actually be pretty easy.  I figure it'd take place between the 2nd and 3rd books.  Emma goes to New York for some science thing and at a conference or museum she meets Peter and they talk science stuff and he asks if later she wants to get dinner and talk some more and she agrees--

Suddenly a villain shows up!  Probably one of Spider-Man's since he's got a much better rogue's gallery and New York is his city.  Probably also one like Electro or Sandman where they can use something sciencey to stop him.  If it could involve a meteor--which is Emma's specialty--that would be better.  The bad guy shows up and Peter makes an excuse and Emma makes an excuse and he goes off to get into his Spider-Man costume and she calls the Scarlet Knight's armor.  Spider-Man's suit is probably easier to get on so he'd get to the bad guy first.  But the bad guy has some new ability or something so Peter can't stop him and then the Scarlet Knight shows up to help.  The bad guy still manages to get away, maybe using a human shield or something.  The bad guy probably leaves some kind of clue.

Spidey and the Scarlet Knight talk but don't give away their secret identities.  Then they take their leave of each other.  Later, Peter and Emma meet again at a diner somewhere and talk.  Suddenly Emma realizes the clue that the bad guy left before.  She excuses herself and gets the armor on to go to the warehouse or wherever the bad guy is hanging out.  Peter's Spidey-sense maybe tells him something is up, so he decides to get in costume and find Emma to make sure she's OK, but instead he finds the Scarlet Knight!

Marlin the ghost warns Emma that she's being followed, so she stops to confront Spider-Man.  They reveal themselves and are a little embarrassed at what happened.  Then Emma explains what she figured out, which makes sense to Peter.  So they go to the warehouse or wherever, Spider-Man swinging and Emma jumping with the armor.

When they get there, they find the bad guy doing something and together they work on a sciencey way to stop the bad guy.

A day or so later when whatever conference or whatever is over, Peter asks Emma if she'd stay a little longer and she says she has to get back to her city, but he's welcome to visit her in Rampart City whenever he wants--she'll even get him a discount on admission to the Plaine Museum.

And Peter is disappointed, but that's pretty status quo for him.  Emma is disappointed too, but she hopes to someday find the right one.

So there you go.  Easy peasy...if I would decide on a bad guy and what his scheme is.  Like it matters.

Naturally then I got wondering how Emma would partner up with other superheroes.

  • Emma might get along with Batman (at least mainstream ones, not the Frank Miller one) but she wouldn't really like Bruce Wayne's playboy shtick.
  • Except for their mutual interest in science & engineering, Emma wouldn't really get along with Tony Stark at all.
  • Emma would get along great with Bruce Banner but the Hulk is not someone she would approve of.
  • Thor is probably too much of a dumb jerk for her to really like.
  • Emma would get along really well with Steve Rogers and Clark Kent, who both have a similar sense of morality, even if she is probably smarter than them both.  As a geologist, Emma would especially be interested in Kryptonite in all its various types.
  • I think she'd also get along really well with T'Challa and since she knows lots of languages, it probably wouldn't take her long to learn Wakandan.  She would definitely love Wakanda if it's like in later comics and the movies.
  • She'd get along with three of the Fantastic Four:  Reed, Sue, and Ben aka Thing.  Johnny the Human Torch she'd probably just be annoyed with him hitting on her.  It'd make a good scene with Emma nicely telling Johnny to stop bothering her and then Ben gives him grief for it and they banter before Johnny leaves and Emma gets back to work with Reed and Sue.

Some others like Wolverine, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner she wouldn't really like them because they're too vicious, arrogant, or nasty.  She'd probably get along with less-jerky ones like Cyborg, Nightwing, or Beast Boy.  Some like Dr. Strange would really be too old for her to like in that way.

As far as female heroes go, she wouldn't be into any of them romantically, but she and Wonder Woman or Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) would probably have mutual respect.  Obviously her and Barbara Gordon would be besties since they're so similar.  Catwoman or Black Cat she wouldn't really approve of their sometimes criminal activities.

I could go on and on but I think you get the point.  Generally she'd like the nicer heroes, especially if they're nice and kinda smart because she's nice and smart.  Antiheroes, especially the Punisher types who kill people, she would find repulsive because she tries not to kill bad guys.  She'd be pretty out of place in Watchmen or The Boys with all the violence and debauchery, though her and Starlight would probably get along pretty well.

Anyway, it's not like I could ever actually write any of these as a story since there's no way Marvel or DC or any reputable publisher would let me use their characters.  Still, it's fun to think about it.
