Building A Perfect Universe

A couple of months ago I finished the latest books in the Union Station series, of which I think there are 16 short, largely plotless books by now.  In that universe there are never any wars or invasions because a race of artificial beings known as the Stryx control space travel and stations like the eponymous Union Station.  The Stryx are so powerful that no one can try to overthrow them and really there's not much reason for anyone to because so long as you aren't trying to start a war or enslave other races the Stryx pretty much leave everyone alone.

It got me thinking that that would be a good thing to have in our universe.  But really much of the rest of that universe isn't great.  Since humans are a relatively new species compared to others they're practically second-class citizens.  And the ships and stuff aren't really all that cool.

Really there's no one sci-fi universe that would be perfect to live in, but if we cherry-pick pieces from sci-fi universes, we could create a perfect universe.

First, we have the Stryx as our robot overlords.  Though benign overlords.  You're probably thinking they'll try to kill all humans like Skynet, Ultron, the Matrix, etc. but that's because those were all created by humans.  Thus it's not really a surprise that those AIs all turn out as evil and corrupt as humans.  Whereas the Stryx were programmed by some highly evolved advanced race, which is why they aren't evil or corrupt like humans.  Anyway, with them watching our back we don't have to worry about galactic wars or anything like that.

As far as travel, I like Star Trek ships best.  Specifically I think the Next Generation ships would be the most comfortable for traveling around in.

For smaller craft Star Wars ships are better, not that we'll really need X-wings or TIE fighters, but there would be legitimate uses for a Millennium Falcon.  Though I'd rather fly around in a Robotech Veritech fighter.

The Star Trek economy would also be good as you don't really need money and people can generally do what they want to do.  As an extension of that the Star Trek replicators for food and transporters for beaming people and stuff would also be good to have.  The Star Trek Universal Translator is OK but having the Babel Fish from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy would be better, though kinda icky to put it in your ear.

But how great would it be to have the Force?  No having to get up and grab the remote or a beer; you just hold out your hand and it comes to you.  Droids might be pretty nice for handling a lot of the mundane chores.  And lightsabers would be awesome just cuz.

It'd be sweet to have the head jacks like in The Matrix so you can learn to fly a helicopter or do kung-fu instantly.  Who needs a holodeck when you can just plug in right from your own place?

As far as healthcare, Star Wars bacta tanks are pretty awesome.  Just float in some blue goo and after a while you're all fixed!  Unless you get a hand cut off.  Star Trek has some nice medical tech for more mundane things.  Keeping people's heads alive in jars like Futurama has some positives but it also seems kinda creepy.

And of course we really need the "three seashells" from Demolition Man...

What sort of things would you poach to make a perfect universe?

It’s funny because a lot of sci-fi is ripped off from other sci-fi. Most of Star Wars was ripped off from Flash Gordon. That said a series taking Futurama and making it a drama would be pretty cool. Imagine the horror of waking up as disembodied head!

Star Trek, Star Wars, The Matrix, I'm having so much fun with all the sci-fi rerences. As a perfect universe, I'd like to see retro futurist stories, stuff that was written in the 40s or 50s talking about space rockets and mega huge computers that would come out in the year 2000!
