Storypalooza: The Agoraphobic's Wife

Over 10 years ago I had an idea for a literary fiction story or maybe a kind of romantic story called The Agoraphobic's Wife.  I mean there have been plenty of other "So-And-So's Wife" books, right?  I actually wrote a chapter or two of this when I was on vacation in Tawas, Michigan.  But it just wasn't clicking for me and I dropped it--and all writing for about six months.

The idea is pretty obvious on the surface:  a woman marries an agoraphobic guy and has to deal with his phobia.

The couple would meet when they were young and form a friendship.  The guy would show some quirks, but the problem wouldn't get too bad until around the time of the wedding.  He's able to white-knuckle it through that and things seem like they're going to be all right.

But eventually the guy refuses to go outside.  The woman puts up with this for a while.  Over time, though, the guy's world becomes smaller and smaller.  It goes from not leaving the house to not going downstairs to not leaving the bedroom and maybe in the end not leaving bed.

It's another one of those where I'm not really sure how it was going to end.  Maybe she leaves the guy.  Or maybe she stays.  Or maybe she kills him.  Or maybe he kills himself.  How do you think it should end?

How about she drugs him and takes him out in the middle of nowhere. He wakes up in a wide open space where he's forced to survive or not.

Could go either horror movie route, like "The Boy" or Hallmark route where he gets help and they overcome it lol.

It should end with him finding a reason to face his phobia and conquer it.

Maybe he could be hypnotized without his awareness and find himself waking outside? Conflict makes for good stories.

This is a tricky one because you’re mixing a very serious condition which is out of his control with domestic violence which is definitely in his control. Maybe show he was a domineering creep before his illness manifest?

I had the same problem with a movie named Highwayman where the guy is hunting down a serial hit-and-run killer. The guy was paralyzed from a car accident and it was really heard to hate him.
