Egads! It's Box Office Blitz Week 12!

First, a moment of silence for film critic Roger Ebert, who passed away at age 70 after a long battle with cancer.  He was left unable to speak but he still had a voice through Twitter and Facebook, which is where I found out more about him and realized how great he was not just as a critic but as a person.  He will be missed.

So, last week GI Joe did a little better than I thought it would.  Probably better than Paramount thought it would do when they pushed it back last year.  Anyway, after the last few weeks, I guess I should just leave the analysis to professionals because I obviously suck at trying to analyze the public's moviegoing tastes.

Anyway, just to remind you of the rules, you guess which three movies will rule the box office this weekend.  For each one you guess right you get 50 points.  If you get it in the right position you get 50 bonus points.  And if you win the round you get 500 bonus points.

Now then, here's the list from my local megaplex (* indicates a new release):

  • 21 and Over
  • A Good Day to Die Hard
  • Admission
  • Evil Dead*
  • GI Joe:  Retaliation
  • Identity Thief
  • Jack the Giant Slayer
  • Jurassic Park 3D* (It seems silly to flag a movie from 1993 as "new")
  • Olympus Has Fallen
  • Oz the Great & Powerful
  • Quartet
  • Safe Haven
  • Silver Linings Playbook
  • Spring Breakers
  • The Call
  • The Croods
  • The Host
  • Tyler Perry's Temptation
Jeez, is it me or for a 30-screen theater are they not showing that much this week?  I mean only 1 real new release and 1 re-release in 3D.

All right, no explanations or analysis, just guessing.
  1. Evil Dead $35M
  2. GI Joe $25M
  3. Croods $20M
OK, now you guess in the comments.

And now here's your bonus question.  I'll make it worth 300 points this week for no real reason.  Cuz I can.  Last week I had you bet on or against me and I'll continue that trend this week.

Currently only 100 points separate me and Rusty Carl from 3rd place.  On Sunday when the scores are updated, who will be in third place:  PT Dilloway or Rusty Carl or will it be tied?

(Those are the only options since Andrew is 800 points ahead for 2nd place and Briane Pagel is 1100 points behind in 5th.  I mean unless I win the round and Andrew gets 0 points.  But the chances of that are worse than a Scarlet Knight movie showing up in the theaters.)

The results should be posted on Sunday, unless I forget to do it and then it would be on Monday.

I haven't been to the movies in a long time. We just got Showtime and I'm engrossed in Homecoming and The Borgias.

Nobody's picking Jurassic Park? I'm going with Jurassic Park:

1. Jurassic Park $25 mil
2. Evil Dead $20 mil
3. Croods $19 mil

I'm backing Rusty for the bonus. No offense. Also that intro was uncharacteristically ungrumpy. But Ebert seemed like a good guy.
