Box Office Blitz Week 11!

Here's a meaningless Fun Fact for you:  by my count there have been 8 movies that were the second in a series released since "summer" movie season began.  Those would be Star Trek Into Darkness, Despicable Me 2, Grown Ups 2, Insidious 2, Kick-Ass 2, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Red 2, and Smurfs 2.  So #2 was really popular at the box office this summer.  And it would also describe the quality of a lot of movies released this summer.  Ba-zing!

And now here's the list from my local megaplex (* denotes a new release):

  • 2 Guns
  • Austenland
  • Battle of the Year* (aka every group dancing movie ever)
  • Blue Jasmine
  • Despicable Me 2
  • Elysium
  • Generation Iron*
  • Insidious 2
  • Instructions Not Included
  • Lee Daniels' The Butler
  • Mortal Instruments:  City of Bones
  • One Direction: This is Us
  • Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
  • Planes
  • Prisoners*
  • Riddick
  • The Colony*
  • The Family
  • The Smurfs 2
  • The Spectacular Now
  • The Wolverine
  • The World's End
  • We're the Millers
I suppose I'll go with:
  1. Prisoners $18M
  2. Insidious 2 $9M
  3. Battle of the Year $7M
Now make your picks in the comments!

Prisoners - $20 mil
Insidious 2 - $15 mil
Battle of the Year - $6 mil

That title is entirely misleading. I had to look it up to know what it is. I was hoping it was something way more epic and fantastical... and battleish.

Percy Jackson is back? These are dreadful movies but someone must like them for there to be sequels.

We saw "Prisoners" today and it was very good -- I'd give it 3 1/2, 4 stars, at least. Wolverine is excellent in it, the star of the movie, but it rises above a regular procedural both for the quality of the red herrings (none of which are really red herrings, AT ALL, SPOILER ALERT, but they are, SORT OF, which is what makes it good) but also for the way it really poses uncomfortable moral questions. It could ALMOST taken as an allegory, but don't let that make you NOT go see it. I think everything, up to and including the supersize slice of Rocky Rococo's pizza I got for lunch, as an allegory.

Anyway, my picks are therefore maybe a little biased.

It's surprising that "Despicable Me" is one of the most popular movies of the year. Especially since it's a sequel.
