Box Office Blitz: Week 3

It's Week 3 of Box Office Blitz and the scores are still close enough that it's anyone's game.  Only 100 points separate me and Andrew Leon and with up to 800 points at stake here, things can change quickly.

Just a review of the rules:
  • The winner of each round gets a 500 point bonus.
  • Each movie you guess that ends up in the top 3 gets you 50 points
  • You get another 50 point bonus for each one you get in the correct position (ie if your #1 pick is the actual #1 movie you get 50 extra points)
  • In case of a tie, the one who guesses closest to top grossing movie's take that weekend will be declared the winner (and if by some miracle that's a tie then we'll go down to the 2nd grossing movie, etc.)
And now from my local theater here's what's playing (* means a new release):
  • Hansel & Gretel:  Witch Hunters*
  • The Last Stand
  • A Haunted House
  • Argo
  • Broken City
  • Django Unchained
  • Gangster Squad
  • Jack Reacher
  • Les Miserables
  • Life of Pi
  • Lincoln
  • Mama
  • Movie 43*
  • Parental Guidance
  • Parker*
  • Silver Linings Playbook
  • The Guilt Trip
  • The Impossible
  • Zero Dark 30
I honestly don't feel very strongly about the new releases this week.  That's the problem with movies in January.  Things will get more interesting in a few months when it turns to "summer" movie season which ironically is just about over a month after real summer begins.

Anyway, I'll half-heartedly pick:
  1. Hansel & Gretel $20M
  2. Zero Dark 30 $15M
  3. Movie 43 $12M
Now it's time to make your picks!  The scores will be tallied up on Sunday after the results come in.

Monday is an All-Star Comic Captions...

I'm gonna go see something this weekend. I'm sure my choice will not affect the box office.

I had not even known you were doing this!

So I did some research. Last year on this weekend, number 9 was "The Descendants," which means I watched that movie last year which means I completely forgot it at the year-end 100, which is a shame because in retrospect I would have included it in the year-end 100, but obviously if it didn't stick in my mind until year's end, it wasn't top 100, was it? OR WAS IT?

It was. I just forgot it because I am old.

SO I am going to say:

1. Movie 43, $19,000,000
2. Zero Dark Thirty: $10,000,000
3. Hansel & Gretel, $9,000,000.

Jeremy Renner is making the most of his time near the top but people don't want to see him in a poorly-thought-out Von Helsing remake. Only Kristen Stewart has succeeded with reimagining fairy tales, and that was only because of Twihards.
